Some Get it ... Some Don't
Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet with two pastors who believe in reaching out to teen mothers. They committed their congregations and their churches' financial support to assisting Teen Mother Choices in serving teen mothers in the Gurnee, Illinois area. I left that meeting totally energized and ready to get back to work. Their responses were so totally different from the one I received from another pastor a while back.
I should have just turned around and walked out of his office the minute I first walked in! There he sat behind his HUGE desk working at his computer. His glasses barely hanging on the end of his nose. He looked over his glasses at me as I walked in the door. "I'm very busy, so I only have a minute." he said. I thanked him for that minute and proceeded to tell him about Teen Mother Choices. "That's all fine," he said "but why should my church be involved?" I tried my best to tell him of the blessings a church receives when it reaches out to teen mothers and their children. "The people in my congregation already give a lot to groups like "teen mothers" (his fingers made that annoying quoting motion as he said teen mothers)through their taxes. This is, after all, a very wealthy church. I see no reason to ask them to give money again to a program that dublicates what government agencies are already doing. Now, if you will excuse me I need to get back to work." And with that, his eyes once again looked down his nose, through his glasses and to his computer screen.
I walked out of his office, brushed off my shoes at his office door and left the building.
Some get it ... and some don't
